MEDIA STUDIES

Media Studies is a subject which draws from a variety of areas – English, Sociology, Economics, Politics, Technology to name a few. It relies on the wealth of information that exists in the world of film, advertising, newsprint, magazines, television, internet technology and radio and music for its main focus.

The subject studies the following four areas:

  1. Language of media – in print, film, advertising and all other media related areas.
  2. Representation - how an issue is represented through the medium that is used.
  3. Institution  - the source of the media -
  4. Audience – The general  nature of society and trends within society.

The central skills which are developed are those which enable the student to demonstrate a clear understanding of the media through exploration of the different mediums used, analysing society and the impact of media on society and investigating media issues. Students must be able to describe, explain and analyse media issues and ensure an ability to carry the study further so as to include the wider implications, issues and ramifications of the topic.
