  • We are excited to welcome Julie Ball as our new Careers Specialist here at Trident High School!

    Julie's role is to help our students find their pathways, whether it be work, university, apprenticeships or other opportunities. She will be working closely with our students to help them find their passion and support them. Her ultimate goal is to be in a position to help all students, not just academically, but also by providing opportunities to gain experience. Julie has a wealth of experience in the education sector, having worked at Mount College for 16 years before joining the Gateway Careers team at Whakatane High School. She believes that upskilling is important for everyone and that we should all be lifelong learners. She always strives for her goals and encourages students to do the same, as it is important for them to see progression and always be learning. Julie approaches her job in a holistic way, instilling self-worth and self-confidence in our students. She believes that it is important for students to discover the opportunities available to them and to make the most of them. In addition to her role as Careers Specialist, Julie is also teaching Year 10 Maths. Outside of school, she enjoys swimming, doing the bird walk steps and generally keeping fit. She also loves interior design and spending time with her family and friends. We are thrilled to have Julie as part of our team and look forward to her making a positive impact on our students' lives. She also wants to remind senior students to join the Senior Facebook page for opportunities and updates.

  • Welcoming new Deputy Principal Jenny Mays to Trident High School

    We are delighted to welcome our new Deputy Principal, Jenny Mays, to Trident High School! With over 20 years of teaching experience, including working in four different countries. Jenny brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our community. Originally from the UK, Jenny has called New Zealand home for the past 13 years. She has previously worked for three years in Te Puke and spent seven years in Opotiki, where she served as the Deputy Principal for curriculum. Jenny and her husband are proud business owners, and together they have three wonderful children. The Mays family also includes their adorable Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, Rīwai , whose name means "potato" Trident is thrilled to have Jenny join our whanau. She is eager to make connections with students and their whanau. Jenny has an open-door policy, encouraging students, staff and whanau to approach her with any concerns or ideas. Jenny's favourite subjects in school were physical education and technology, which aligns perfectly with her background as a trained PE teacher. She believes that strong relationships between teachers and students are essential for improving educational outcomes, and she is committed to nurturing these relationships here at Trident High School. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Jenny Mays. We look forward to her contributions in helping Trident High School continue to thrive.

    Trident High School welcomes Robyn McConnache! We are thrilled to have Robyn as our new part-time Learning Support Coordinator. With her extensive experience in teaching all levels of primary school in the Bay of Plenty, Wellington, and Gisborne, we are confident that she will bring valuable knowledge and insights to our secondary school environment. Robyn was born and raised in Matata and is of Ngati Hei descent from Wharekaho Whitianga. She has a keen interest in ancestry DNA and spending time with family, and is also a crafty person who enjoys various creative pursuits. As a lover of reading and writing, Robyn's favourite subject in school was English. She is excited about being at Trident High School and is looking forward to coordinating the needs of our students in her new role. Robyn is eager to bring her primary school experience and expertise to the secondary school environment. Once again, welcome to Trident High School, Robyn! We look forward to working with you and seeing the positive impact you will make on our students' learning and wellbeing.

  • Judith Graham, full circle and back to Trident!

    Trident High school welcomes Judith Graham, our School Counsellor for 2023. Judith taught at Trident almost 30 years ago and her experience and expertise are invaluable. “I'm very happy to be at Trident High School this year, stepping in for Mrs Angela Barr while she is away on study leave. I've worked as a counsellor in Whakatane for 25 years, firstly at Voyagers and for the last 15 years at Whakatane High School. It feels as if I've come full circle returning to Trident after teaching here nearly 30 years ago! I enjoy the passion and potential teenagers bring to life and am looking forward to my conversations with Trident rangatahi.”

  • Welcome to the Trident whānau.

    Darren Florence, Assistant HOD Science, is brand new to Trident High School in 2023. Darren comes from a background in veterinary medicine having practiced as a large animal vet in the Bay of Plenty, Thames Valley and in Rural Wales. Following a late calling into teaching, he has undertaken various roles at Rotorua Boys' High School during the last seven years including teacher of Biology and Chemistry, assistant boarding house master, HOD for Science and rugby coach/manager. Darren has a passion for the great outdoors and particularly enjoys spending time with family whilst hunting, fishing, mountain biking and surfing. Darren says “I’m really excited to be starting at Trident High School, not just for the wonderful outdoor opportunities but also to be working in a friendly and welcoming team and being part of a well-resourced Science department! I can see a lot of exciting opportunities for our ākonga and I cannot wait to get stuck in.”

  • Musical genius, Hugh Oyanagi.

    We caught up with Hugh Oyanagi recently, before he headed off to university in Christchurch. Hugh is a talented pianist! He completed his music courses from Year 9 right through to NCEA Level 3 at Trident High School. In 2022 Hugh performed a music programme for Scholarship Music on Performance. He has also played piano and alto saxophone for the Trident Jazz Band for the past five years, resulting in multiple gold medals. Hugh was one of the school's prefects, and Dux for 2022. We wish Hugh all the very best for his future.

  • We welcome new staff to Trident

    Miss Joanna Boonen has returned to Trident's English department after time away where she has been studying as a full time student. We are privileged to have her back and know her return will be celebrated by the students who have been lucky enough to have her as their teacher. "I am glad to be returning back to Trident after studying both Classics and Philosophy at Massey University. I can talk endlessly about Films and Media, Greek and Roman gods, and the Ancient world that shaped our Western philosophy. I am excited about rejoining the Trident English department, and am looking forward to sharing my passion for language and literature with our students." Mr Stephen Armstrong has joined our English department and we warmly welcome him to our school. Having come from Tauranga he says "Tauranga is hot, but Whakatane is hotter! I have good memories of my time teaching at Opotiki College from 1987-1989. My wife Sharon and I have four adult children (can you have adult children?). We have 3 grandchildren living here, and we're looking forward to hitting the bush and beach. But most of all, the highlight for me will be inspiring the rangitahi of Trident to love reading and writing and to love life with all its challenges. After 20 years at Bethlehem College, I thought it was time to broaden my horizons, so here I am at Trident!" Mrs Cindy Glass to our English department and we warmly welcome her to Trident High School. "I moved to New Zealand from South Africa in June 2019. I have been teaching since 1994 and I have a passion for assisting young people in achieving their potential. I love being outdoors and I am an avid scuba diver. I also enjoy mountain biking, swimming in the sea and hiking with my whanau. I am the mum of two sons. My older son studies at Auckland University and my younger son attends school at Whakatane Intermediate. My whanau and I feel very grateful to live in this beautiful country and it is a privilege to get to know and work alongside the wonderful people of New Zealand."
